Purpose of the Role: The Accountant / Senior Accountant is responsible for managing a portfolio of clients, including individuals, trust companies, and close corporations. This role involves performing various accounting engagements, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, and providing comprehensive accounting services and financial statements. Key Responsibilities:
  • Client Portfolio Management:
    • Oversee a portfolio of clients, including individuals, trusts, and close corporations.
    • Perform engagements including Compilation Engagements (ISRS 4410), Independent Review Engagements (ISRE 2400), and accounting officer duties as per the Close Corporations Act.
  • Engagement Execution:
    • Ensure proper planning and adherence to SNG Grant Thornton Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    • Review junior staff working papers and independent review files.
    • Propose journals to clients and communicate engagement arrangements and results.
  • Accounting Duties:
    • Prepare, process, and maintain accounting records for various clients from source documents.
    • Conduct balance sheet reconciliations and prepare review/compilation files and final accounts.
    • Prepare monthly management accounts and reconcile intercompany loan accounts.
    • Prepare interest schedules on loan accounts and process monthly general journals.
    • Draft financial statements per IFRS and IFRS for SMEs using CaseWare.
    • Perform tax computations for companies, close corporations, and trusts, including special allowances.
    • Prepare and submit statutory returns.
  • Engagement Management:
    • Manage work-in-progress (WIP) and budgets on engagements.
    • Update managers and directors on engagement progress.
    • Mentor junior staff and provide training and support as needed.
    • Assist with ad-hoc processing using Pastel Director, Xero, or CaseWare.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Attend to tax queries and other matters arising.
    • Participate in outsourced projects and perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Education:
    • BCom Financial Accounting and Tax as majors.
    • SAIPA or SAICA articles.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in accounting with familiarity in CaseWare working papers.
    • Experience with accounting software such as Pastel Director, Xero, or similar is preferred.
  • Competencies:
    • Detailed knowledge of accounting standards and practices.
    • Ability to lead a team effectively and work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Fluency in English and Afrikaans to effectively manage client interactions.
